"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States."
Each president of the United States recites the oath of office in accordance with Article II, Section I of the U.S. Constitution. As America's first president, George Washington was the first to proclaim these words on April 30, 1789, on the balcony of Federal Hall in New York City.
